Challenge
National Grid Ventures is developing the UK’s first Offshore Hybrid Assets (OHAs) - LionLink (UK–Netherlands) and Nautilus (UK–Belgium) - to connect offshore wind to multiple markets via HVDC subsea cables. LionLink will deliver up to 2GW of capacity, and Nautilus 1.4GW. These trailblazing projects face significant complexity due to evolving regulatory frameworks, cross-border coordination, and a competitive supply chain demanding early Capacity Reservation Agreements - often ahead of Final Investment Decisions.
Solution
G&T is providing Procurement Support, Programme Management, Contract Management and Commercial services, partnering with NGV to shape and implement procurement strategies, contract management frameworks, and project controls tailored to the unique demands of both schemes. Drawing on deep experience in offshore transmission, we supported contract reviews, programme re-baselining, and the development of compliant, value-driven procurement processes. For LionLink, our re-baselining work helped to mitigate schedule risks and protect value. For Nautilus, we developed a comprehensive procurement strategy with embedded KPIs, evaluation criteria, and risk mitigations - providing a structured path to market engagement and delivery readiness.
Outcome
Our involvement has strengthened governance, reduced commercial risk, and enhanced cost and schedule certainty across both projects. LionLink and Nautilus are now positioned to form a critical part of a future integrated North Sea energy grid. By enabling cross-border sharing of offshore wind power, these OHAs support national and European net zero goals while reducing infrastructure duplication and minimising onshore disruption. G&T’s strategic input is helping to unlock cleaner, smarter transmission for the next generation of energy networks.
