Challenge
Panmure House, a Category A Listed building in Edinburgh's Canongate, served as the residence of renowned economist Adam Smith from 1778 until his death in 1790. Despite its historical significance, the 17th-century structure had fallen into disrepair, necessitating a sensitive restoration to preserve its architectural integrity while adapting it for modern educational and cultural use. The challenge was to transform Panmure House into a functional space for lectures, seminars, and events, honouring its legacy and meeting contemporary standards.
Solution
G&T provided Project Management services for the meticulous restoration and extension of Panmure House. Collaborating with Edinburgh Business School and EKJN Architects, we oversaw the careful refurbishment of the existing structure and the addition of a contemporary extension. The new entrance foyer and interpretation space, illuminated by a glass roof, seamlessly integrate with the historic fabric, while the interior now features state-of-the-art learning facilities, including a reading room and lecture hall.
Outcome
The revitalised Panmure House now serves as an inspiring venue for educational programmes, lectures, and cultural events, re-establishing its role as a hub for intellectual discourse. The project has successfully preserved the historical essence of Adam Smith's residence while equipping it for contemporary use, ensuring its relevance for future generations. G&T's project management expertise was instrumental in delivering the restoration on time and within budget, contributing to the cultural enrichment of Edinburgh's World Heritage Site.
