Shepherd's Bush Market and Old Laundry Yard

From historic market to mixed-use community

Revitalising a West London landmark with affordable homes, workspace and public realm enhancements

Client

Yoo Capital

Location

London

Size

4.2 acres

Challenge

Shepherd’s Bush Market, a century-old trading hub, required sensitive regeneration to preserve its cultural significance while meeting contemporary needs. The adjacent Old Laundry Yard, previously used for temporary community initiatives, presented an opportunity for redevelopment. The challenge was to integrate new residential and commercial spaces without displacing existing traders or compromising the market's heritage.

Solution

G&T is providing Cost Management and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services for the redevelopment. The scheme includes the refurbishment of the existing market, introducing new stalls and shops, and enhancing the public realm with improved surfacing, drainage and landscaping. A new eight-storey commercial building will offer flexible workspace, a café and life sciences accommodation, while a six-storey residential building will provide 40 affordable homes. The design respects the market's character, ensuring traders can continue operating successfully.

Outcome

The project is set to deliver a vibrant mixed-use community across a 4.2-acre site, carefully balancing modern development with the preservation of Shepherd’s Bush Market's unique identity. G&T is supporting the scheme to ensure it remains aligned with stakeholder needs, with plans for a revitalised market, new affordable housing, and enhanced public spaces designed to benefit both traders and the wider community once complete.
