Final Designs for Queen Elizabeth National Memorial Revealed

The final designs for the national memorial to Queen Elizabeth II have been revealed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of her birth.

The permanent memorial park, designed by Foster + Partners in collaboration with Michael Desvigne Paysagiste, will commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her lifelong commitment to public service.

Approved unanimously by Westminster Council, the scheme will create a network of gardens through St James’s Park, linked by a new bridge crossing the park’s lake and replacing the existing 1950s Blue Bridge.

G&T is providing Cost Management services on the project, with WSP providing construction logistics advice and DP9 acting as planning consultant. The wider team also includes Arup as security and operations consultant, Rendel Ltd as civil engineer, Ramboll as ecology consultant and Purcell as heritage consultant.

"The national memorial is a project of profound civic and cultural significance, and we are proud for G&T to be contributing cost management services to help bring this vision forward"

The memorial is designed to provide spaces for reflection and relaxation, while celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's legacy through a series of permanent features. These include the new cast-glass bridge inspired by Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara, a bust of Queen Elizabeth II in her later years by sculptor Karen Newman, The Commonwealth Wind Sculpture by Yinka Shonibare and a compass designed by Norman Foster referencing the nations of the Commonwealth. The design also includes gardens dedicated to the Commonwealth and the nations of the United Kingdom.

A new standing statue of Queen Elizabeth II overlooking The Mall at Marlborough Gate will be created by sculptor Martin Jennings who will also sculpt a nearby statue of Prince Philip, recognising the support he gave Her Majesty during her 70-year reign.

The memorial has been developed in consultation with the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee following a design competition held last year. His Majesty The King has been sighted throughout the process and the Committee’s proposals were approved by the Prime Minister in April 2026.

Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman, Foster + Partners, said: “The Queen’s reign encompassed periods of significant change – socially and technologically – which she negotiated with incredible composure and stability. The memorial reaches across all ages and interests – and communicates the common values that Her Majesty promoted. With a serene and contemplative atmosphere, there will be opportunities to rediscover – or perhaps for some to discover – the legacy of Her Majesty.”

Neil Langford, Partner at G&T, said: “Queen Elizabeth’s national memorial is a project of profound civic and cultural significance, and we are proud for G&T to be contributing cost management services to help bring this vision forward. The memorial will create a lasting place of reflection and remembrance in the heart of London, and it is a privilege to support the wider team in delivering a scheme that honours Her Majesty’s extraordinary legacy of public service.”
