Challenge
Originally designed by Sir Edwin 'Ned' Lutyens in 1924, the former Midland Bank building is a Grade I Listed landmark in the heart of London. The challenge was to sensitively transform this historically significant, large-scale structure into a contemporary luxury destination without compromising its architectural integrity. Adapting the building to accommodate a hotel, members’ club, restaurants, and leisure facilities demanded expert navigation of conservation regulations, structural complexities, and planning constraints.
Solution
G&T provided Project Management, Construction & Property Tax Advice, and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services. We played a pivotal role in leading the design and construction process, coordinating with Soho House and the Sydell Group to ensure the successful integration of 252 bedrooms, multiple F&B outlets, a rooftop pool, gym, spa, and event spaces. Our detailed oversight helped manage risk, ensure compliance, and guide the project through the intricacies of restoring and retrofitting a Listed building of national importance.
Outcome
The Ned has become a celebrated hospitality landmark in the City of London, known for its blend of historic character and modern luxury. The project has not only preserved and revived one of the capital’s architectural gems but has also redefined it as a vibrant destination for members, guests, and the wider public. G&T’s role was central in delivering this complex and high-profile project, ensuring quality, safety, and heritage were upheld at every stage.
