Challenge
Westminster Abbey aimed to transform its 13th-century triforium—a space unused for over 700 years—into a public gallery showcasing the Abbey's rich history. This ambitious project required integrating modern exhibition facilities within a Grade I listed building, necessitating careful preservation of historic fabric. Additionally, access to the new galleries needed to be provided without compromising the Abbey's architectural integrity.
Solution
G&T provided Cost and Project Management services, overseeing the £22.9 million transformation. Collaborating with architects MUMA and Ptolemy Dean, G&T managed the construction of the Weston Tower—the first major addition to the Abbey since 1745—providing discreet access to the galleries. G&T ensured that the project met conservation standards, budget constraints, and programme requirements, facilitating the seamless integration of modern amenities within the historic structure.
Outcome
The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries offer visitors a unique perspective of the Abbey and house over 300 artefacts spanning its 1,000-year history. The project has been lauded for its sensitive design and execution, receiving accolades including RICS London's Project of the Year and Building Conservation Award. G&T's strategic management was instrumental in delivering a project that honours the Abbey's heritage while enhancing its public engagement.
