Challenge
The historic Monk Bridge viaduct in Leeds had been closed to the public for over 40 years, severing a once-important connection across the city. As part of the Wellington Place regeneration, the brief was to reinstate public access—creating a unique elevated green corridor—while maintaining the integrity of the Grade II Listed structure and coordinating with multiple stakeholders including MEPC, Leeds City Council, and adjacent residential developments.
Solution
G&T provided Project Management services, overseeing the design and delivery of lift and stair access from the viaduct down to street level. We managed the integration of the restored railway deck with its new landscaped park above, ensuring safe public use. Our team coordinated technical aspects—structural strengthening, accessibility compliance and landscaping—with contractors and heritage advisors, facilitating a seamless delivery that honoured the structure’s historical significance.
Outcome
The reactivated viaduct link re‑establishes a distinctive public realm element, enhancing connectivity between Wellington Place and the vibrant Junction waterside district. It introduces Yorkshire’s first elevated urban park—complete with planting, seating and cycle route—creating new walking, leisure and transport links for city users. G&T’s leadership in project delivery ensured the historic structure was sensitively restored, operational within schedule, and now serves as a dynamic green corridor at the heart of Leeds.
