Challenge
Central Foundation Boys' School, a historic institution in Shoreditch faced the challenge of modernising its campus to meet contemporary educational standards while preserving its architectural heritage. The campus consisted of seven buildings, including a Grade II Listed former county court and the Tabernacle Chapel, assembled over 150 years around a central courtyard. The school needed to upgrade its facilities to enhance the learning environment, accommodate increasing student numbers and ensure long-term sustainability, all within the constraints of a tight urban site and limited budget.
Solution
To address these challenges, the school embarked on a phased redevelopment plan, collaborating with architects Hawkins\Brown. The redevelopment involved demolishing unsuitable structures and constructing state-of-the-art facilities, including new science laboratories and a partially subterranean sports hall beneath the central courtyard. The historic Tabernacle Chapel was sensitively refurbished to create a Creative Arts Centre, encompassing music practice rooms, classrooms, a recording studio, art rooms and a versatile performance space.
Outcome
G&T's expertise ensured that the project navigated financial and logistical constraints effectively, maintaining the school's operations throughout the redevelopment. The completed redevelopment transformed the campus into a cohesive and efficient educational environment, providing upgraded spaces that blend modern facilities with the site's historical context. Our comprehensive Project and Cost Management services were instrumental in delivering a campus that supports the school's commitment to educational excellence while preserving its rich heritage.
