The world's largest city museum will welcome visitors to its new permanent home this November, completing one of Europe's largest and most ambitious cultural regeneration projects.
London Museum has announced that it will officially open its new permanent galleries on 28 November 2026, marking the completion of the £437 million transformation of the historic Victorian General Market at Smithfield into the world's largest city museum.
Opening in time for the museum's 50th anniversary, the new cultural destination will tell the story of London through thousands of objects, including iconic artefacts and previously unseen items from the museum's collection. Designed as a new social space for the capital, the museum has been shaped by contributions from more than 100,000 people from London and beyond, helping to influence its galleries, programmes and public spaces.
G&T provided Cost Management services throughout the landmark project, supporting the delivery of one of Europe's largest cultural infrastructure schemes. The decade-long redevelopment has restored the Grade II Listed market buildings while creating a world-class museum that celebrates London's past, present and future.
"The opening of London Museum is a significant milestone for London and everyone involved in delivering this remarkable project."Neil Langford
Partner, G&T
Designed by Stanton Williams and Asif Khan alongside conservation architects Julian Harrap, the museum occupies one of the oldest parts of the City of London. The project has brought the long-disused General Market back into public use for the first time in more than three decades, carefully preserving its architectural heritage while adapting it for modern cultural use.
The transformation has drawn on the expertise of more than 70 specialist trades, from heritage coppersmiths and master stonemasons to sustainable construction specialists. Since 2023, the project has also created opportunities for more than 40 apprentices across a range of construction and engineering disciplines.
Sustainability has been central to the redevelopment, with innovative features including renewable geothermal energy, rainwater harvesting and an industry-first eco-concrete mix. The museum is expected to achieve a BREEAM 'Outstanding' rating, placing it among the top one per cent of sustainable buildings worldwide.
Neil Langford, Partner at G&T, said: "The opening of London Museum is a significant milestone for London and everyone involved in delivering this remarkable project. It has been a privilege for G&T to provide Cost Management services on the transformation of one of the capital's most important historic buildings into a cultural destination that will serve future generations. Successfully balancing heritage conservation, design ambition, sustainability and value has required exceptional collaboration across the entire project team, and the result is a museum that sets a new benchmark for the regeneration of historic assets."
Sharon Ament, Director of London Museum, said: "This has been a long undertaking – not without its challenges but mostly filled with immense joy and hyper-creativity – and now we are counting down the days to welcome our first visitors. I hope our museum is a place where people can come together, feel at home, and find themselves grounded in the lives, treasures, challenges and innovations of this city's vast history. Above all, I hope we make Londoners proud!"
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, added: "The opening of the new London Museum will be a hugely significant moment both for London and internationally. Backed by one of the largest ever cultural investments in our capital, London Museum will attract millions of visitors and Londoners and reinforce our status as the culture capital of the world. London Museum celebrates the past, creates opportunities in the present and will inspire future generations, as we continue to build a better London for everyone."
